Why is it so expensive to eat healthy?

August 26th, 2009 at 02:41 am

I know that I am blessed to be able to eat food and not have to go hungry. I know that so many people in our country and our world go without food every single day. And that is a travesty, indeed. We don't have food shortages in our world, we have inequality in whom and which people and cultures and countries we allow to have food.

I have been trying to do more cooking and I am getting better at it, for sure. I sometimes get a bit irritated that while I want to go and buy veggies and spices and try all these new recipes, I need to watch my food budget. I have enough money for food, and am sooooo far from ever being hungry---it is more along the lines of, "Do I get to treat myself with yummy veggies and health food shakes, or do i get the box of 16 corn dogs for $5.99 (which turns out to be .37 cents per chicken corn dog)." I won't lie, most often times I get the corn dogs as I thinking that I will eat 2 or 3 per meal serving. sigh.

I have been eating more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. Primarily because they are cheap.

I know I shouldn't complain...I should just become a much better cook!!

i have never thought healthy food to be that expensive; but i guess i am one of those people that have never even considered eating corn dogs or mac and cheese for a meal either. i am not trying to put you down, and i apologise in advance if it sounds that way, it is just something i personally would not do.

to put it in perspective though, imagine if you ate unhealthy food your entire life, you would probably have to spend your 'savings' on doctors visits etc. if you ate healthily, the little bit it might cost is priceless when you consider the full life you will lead in your future. to me, there isn't even a choice to be made.

What are the five or six cheapest vegetables you can buy? Maybe focus on using those in your cooking more often? I suspect a carrot is cheaper than a corn dog, for example. Wink

It can be incredibly cheap to eat healthy, if you're willing to forgo variety and fancy recipes.

Food (for the home that is, let's not talk about my restaurant budget) is the one thing that I spend virtually no money on (under $50/wk for sure). I buy almost all organic produce and whole wheat products, too.

Just limit your meat, which is the priciest, eat lots of veggies with a high water content, eat pasta as your "bad food" but otherwise just lots of fresh stuff. A baked potato with chives, cheese, and broccoli is a great dinner and it's practically free.
